Flameworking
Join us for a fun experience working with flames and glass rods! We will introduce you to basic flameworking techniques where you will learn how to heat glass that you will melt and mold together to create a pendant or figurine.
Most of the workshops are using Borosilicate glass, which is considered a hard glass. The instructor will teach basic safety techniques and then you will choose your colors. The rods will be held in the flame until they start to melt and you will learn to control them to create your piece.
Check the calendar for one of our scheduled one-time flameworking workshops where everyone makes a specific item, but you choose your own colors and give it your personal touch.
Once you have taken a flameworking workshop with us, you are eligible to attend an “Open Torch” session. You will work on a project of your choice while our instructor is there to help with questions and guide you as needed. These are usually on Sundays, so take a look at the calendar and sign up for your spot – seats are limited to 5.
If you want to learn more about the art of flameworking, look for our 6-week Beginner course to teach you all the fundamentals. After that, we offer a 6-week Intermediate course where you can take your skills to another level.
What is flameworking?
Flameworking (or lampworking) is a type of glasswork that uses a torch to melt and shape rods of glass. The torches can reach temperatures over 3,000°F, allowing you to manipulate the molten glass into intricate items like small sculptures, marbles, and jewelry.
Is it safe?
Yes it is, but remember, there are flames (don’t put your hand in front of them) and there is glass that can shatter if heated/cooled too quickly (we have Band-Aids). Propane is used as the gas and the exhaust hood above the flameworking table draws the fumes up and out of the building.
How old do you have to be to participate?
14 and above for individual workshops and 16 and above for the 6-week classes
